- Стой!.. – наконец выкрикнула Икоми на древнем языке.
Приподняв себя на руках, она на ходу слетела со спины скакуна, но из-за неожиданности собственного действия, девушка не сумела проконтролировать собственное тело и, не уловив момент срыва, рухнула на землю, проехавшись на локте предательски подогнувшейся руки. Внезапный страх упругой волной подкатил к горлу, в груди билось чаще, дыхание было слышно ещё в лёгких … Икоми уже заметила, что при падении зажмурилась и лежала теперь, закрыв глаза, а самым ярким пятном ощущений была резкая тянущая боль в руке, которую прижимала своим телом к земле. Она открыла глаза. Её лицо лежало на островке травы, у самого края низкого речного берега; всего парой десятков сантиметров ниже плескалась несущаяся вперёд вода. Можно было дотянуться, даже не вытягивая руки… И Икоми не удержалась. Приподнявшись чуть-чуть, только чтобы можно было вытащить из-под себя болящую руку, она свесила её. Когда подушечки пальцев коснулись прохладного потока, её губ коснулась светлая улыбка. Я Икоми… Не Эльдикомира. От этой мысли улыбка странницы погрустнела. Сколь различны были эти имена и те, кто их носит… Эльдикомира… Как же она ненавидела своё полное имя!.. Ненавидела, но… ведь ненависть – всего лишь разновидность любви, причём самая сильная и самая верная. Первее всего она отсекла от него то, с чего она начиналась: «Эль». Долгое время она играла с остатками своего имени на разный манер и лад. Дико, Мира, Комира и Икоми… Ей не удавалось выбрать ни одно из них… Но однажды… - ...Икоми. Она лишь случайно назвала именно это, а в итоге… Смогла полюбить только его и забыла все прочие. Простой случайный выбор. Наверное, то еле различимое выражение на её лице можно было назвать мечтательным… Икоми усмехнулась и села. Да что с тобой?.. Не могла выбрать других воспоминаний… Девушка задумчиво смотрела на плескавшуюся о глинистый берег воду. Постепенно её глаза грустнели, и уголки губ опускались. Единственное, пожалуй, хорошее воспоминание – и то приносит печаль. Отчаяние… Она старательно о нём не вспоминала, хотя помнила всегда. Добрый приятель – наверное, так можно было назвать это… Икоми обернулась к коню, всё это время фырчащему у неё за спиной. Тёмные умные глаза смотрели на неё неодобрительно. Полукровка вздохнула.
- Извини за такое. Я немного посплю, а позже мы путь продолжим. Только теперь я пойду с тобой рядом, - девушка повела левым плечом.
Опустив голову снова на тот островок травы, Икоми легла на левый бок, подтянула к себе ноги и сложила руки перед собой на земле, свободно перекрестив в запястьях. Прикрыв глаза, полу-эльфийка вслушалась в плеск и шум потока, утопив в нём свои беспокойные мысли… Признаться, она всегда была рассеянной. И в этот раз не обратила внимания, как неудачно легла – на самом краю. Прошло не так уж много времени, прежде чем, пошевелившись в полусне, девушка безвольно соскользнула в воду. И даже не поняла этого… Только отметила, что звучание воды изменилось: теперь она окунулась в гулкие звуки, обволакивающие её сознание… и в приятную прохладу…

Самое опасное состояние – между явью и сном. Сколько жизней было сгублено в нём… Сколько жизнь губилась им… Сквозь плотный туман Икоми начинала ощущать что-то, отличное от поведения воды… более напористо, более твёрдо и ограниченно… направленно… не повсеместно… И вот мягкая обволакивающая прохлада сменилась влажной свежестью на лице… Вдох… Она забыла: необходимо вдыхать воздух… …Сколько же я не дышала?.. Внезапный испуг кольнул под сердце. Девушка закашлялась, хватаясь за жизнь даже чересчур рьяно. Ей повезло… Холодно и мокро. Где она могла промокнуть?.. И почему вода во рту?.. Девушка выпустила тоненькую струйку из уголка губ, привстала, оборачиваясь… и обмерла. Ещё раньше, чем глаза увидели лицо, выхватив только улыбку, чем-то в душе владелец был уже узнан, и от этого знания внутри зазвенел словно бубенчик тревожного недоверия к очевидному… Как в сонном мороке Икоми подняла взгляд выше и едва не вскрикнула. Можно забыть всё: и прикосновение, и шаги, и голос - невозможно забыть глаза, в которые однажды смотрел дольше 5 секунд… Её лицо отразило странный испуг, колотящийся в сердце, испуг, не позволявший взять себя в руки и хотя бы выдохнуть. Девушка вздрогнула, может быть и от налетевшего ветерка. Она уже очнулась, но мысли всё ещё стелились туманом. Контрастно им, растерянный взгляд зеленел ярче просвещённой солнечными лучами листвы.
- О-оох…
Вода, стекающая с волос на глаза, мешала смотреть, преломляя свет радужными сферами, и Икоми попыталась протереть их рукавом; с рукава обильно капало…
- Умно… - хмыкнула полукровка.
Наконец вернув себе подобие душевного равновесия (хотя весы неумолимо кренились) она уверенно развернулась к спасителю, сходу усаживаясь в удобную для длительного сидения позу. Теперь она взглянула смело и прямо. Мокрый с ног до головы, но, кажется, счастливый, спаситель вводил её вновь в замешательство неприкрытостью своей радости. Он рад?.. Икоми заморгала от неожиданности такого факта. Но и её собственные губы уже подрагивали, преломляя сопротивление хозяйки. Чувства взяли верх.
- Скорпио? Ты?.. – Икоми неуверенно улыбнулась, не отрывая взгляда от его глаз, словно цепляясь за эту самую надёжную из всех примет.

Безобидная вроде шутка Скорпио на миг выбила её из колеи совершенно, заставив ощутить острую тревожность. Едва уловив изменение во взгляде, она совсем не успела заметить его движение и то, как оказалась на ногах… Сначала было мокро и оттого холодно, но потом… потом стало тепло, как-то по-особому: не только снаружи, но и изнутри… Икоми неспешно провела ладонью по волосам Скорпио, прикрыв глаза. Она молчала несколько секунд, а потом…
- Ты врёшь, дружок… Ведь ты не только не искал меня, но и почти потерял себя самого.
А лишь коснулась его сознания своим... Одиночка и не думала, что её голос способен звучать так тихо и печально. Человек, забывший свою мечту – это человек, утративший себя. Прилив сладковатого чувства, в которое вылилась звенящая радость, отхлынул, оставив в глазах ощущение послевьюжной пустоты: досада и сожаление. И всё же… она приняла этот жест, пускай ответила намного меньшим и не сумела преодолеть свой глупый защитный, баррикадный механизм. И чувствовала облегчение от того, что он её глаз сейчас не видел. Почему-то ей хотелось спрятать этот вакуумный холод, которым наполнялась жизнь, куда больше хотелось, чем обуздать свои недавние эмоции. Странно… Икоми запамятовала прервать связь с сознанием своего собеседника, но сейчас очнулась и мягко отвела своё от его. Девушка отстранилась, сделала полушаг в сторону и тут же отвернула лицо. Стоять так дальше оказалось для неё невыносимо. Это странное чувство… засасывающей пустоты… оно обострилось и несколько изменилось, только как? Странница посмотрела на Теренаса. Это уже был не тот мальчишка… Ожидаемая ещё с момента прощания грусть снова сжала сердце. Ничто не постоянно в мире… Мир исполнен измен… И он… тоже изменился… но… Выступившие слёзы мгновенно остыли на ветерке и холодили глаза. Икоми негромко судорожно вздохнула, приводя себя в чувство. Нельзя. Не в праве. Почему?..

...Я ведь не знал, куда ты ушла... Эти слова и не эхом трижды повторились в её голове, нарастающим гулом, усиливаясь с каждым ударом сердца, которое знало... просто знало, как невыносим этот простой факт.
- Молчи... - почти беззвучно прошептала одиночка, чуть опуская голову, - Дай на секунду забыть, что ты сейчас здесь есть... помолчи... прошу тебя.
На этих словах Икоми положила свою руку на его, точно так же, как в тот раз, вздохнула и закрыла глаза. Чтобы не видел... нет, чтобы самой не видеть... Забываться - это она отлично умела, иначе бы сошла с ума слишком бессмысленно и быстро. Снова состояние - между сном и явью - лицом к лицу с собой, глаза в глаза, бездушием в душу... Керамическая маска, которую так легко оказалось надеть - всего лишь испугаться. Маска зимы. Безжалостная вьюга разрывала её сжавшуюся душу. Нестерпимой тоской, невыносимой болью полнилось тихое завывание, далёкое, но и ближе некуда, где-то и везде... оно сводило с ума... И этот безмолвный, заглушивший всё стон налетал порывами жёсткими, режущими, хлестал по необычайно вдруг ранимому нечто, как ледяными иглами, твёрдыми крупинками снега, причиняя боль иную: отрезвляющую, леденящую, сковывающую робко бьющееся тепло... Один процент тепла и боли на 99 безжалостного хладнокровного отказа в жизни. Не было ничего проще, чем сказать холодное "нет" - всем: себе, ему, и чувствам, и возможностям, и миру и жизни как таковой... Сказать нет - и мгновенно омертветь. Обындеветь не только снаружи, не только лицом, но изнутри, взглядом... навсегда, абсолютно... Но просто отнюдь не означает легко. Неподъёмная тяжесть, подобно леднику, легла на душу. Вернее даже не так... Ледник давно её сковал, но сейчас, вот совсем в сейчас... Он дал трещину - глубинный разлом, пугающий своей глубиной и мраком в ней. Страшно... К горлу подступали слёзы - жгучие, подобно кислоте, разъедающие лёд и раздражающие почти смирившееся с поражением живое. Да сделай же ты хоть что-то или замолчи!.. С надрывом, истерично, с максимальным накалом сил и чувств прокричала сама себе, но словно... В этот момент, словно её личность, душа её разделилась на три части. Керамическая с изморозью маска, необъятно непреклонная, сжавшийся в тёмной уголке живой страдающий комочек и она... она... рассудившая их... Эльдикомира дрогнула... многотонный пласт льда и всеобъемлющего хлада двинулся.
- Я одиночка, Скорпио... - спокойно сказала полукровка, открывая глаза.
Спокойно, однако... Взгляд уже невозможно было погасить. Он пылал раскалённым металлом, зиял бесконечной пропастью панического страха, молил о понимании и защите сдерживаемыми слезами... Не нашёл... не нашёл! Не меня искал ведь... почему нашёл меня?.. Несправедливо..! Она не смогла бы выразить это голосом так, но её мысли кричали... так пусть слышит, раз кричат ему... И в самом деле, больше всего на свете, ей сейчас хотелось прокричаться. Как обычно кричала во сне, от почти такой же боли. Но уже при нём. Потому что... доверилась уже.

Скорпио послушно замолк, с сочувствием смотря на неё, чувствуя её руку своей и почему-то чувствуя, что сейчас перед ним происходит что-то необычайное... Бой с самой собой, бой с собственными боязнями и желаниями... И она явно не хотела сдаваться, потому что её глаза выражали не холод или тепло, а чистую и незамутнённую боль, которую может испытывать лишь душа, разрываемая на части противоречиями, которые сильнее её, сильнее того, что заставляет её быть сильной и крепкой, синхронизированной с внешним миром, не дают восстановить хрупкое ощущение синергии с самой собой... Всё это, эта битва происходила менее минуты, но она была точно неравной.
- Я одиночка, Скорпио... - Скорпио посмотрел ей в глаза, стараясь взглядом выразить всё, что сейчас было у него в душе, так же укушенной этим холодом, но согреваемой верой в себя и сочувствием, которым она переполнялась, разрушающим пределы восприятия и на краткие секунды, как ему показалось, позволившему ему почувствовать всю тяжесть неизбежной победы холода и мрака в её душе.
Не нашёл... не нашёл! Не меня искал ведь... почему нашёл меня?.. Несправедливо..!
Он улыбнулся, вновь взглянув ей в глаза, улыбнулся мягко, не насмехаясь над её страданиями, а понимая их тяжесть и то, каково ей сражаться с этой холодной пустотой... В ней было гораздо больше сил, чем казалось на первый взгляд и он точно не смог бы увидеть в ней этого стремления... Стремления стать той собой, остатки которой тогда, в старом доме, явили себя молодому и неразумному мальчишке... А сейчас... всё, что он мог сделать - было это.
Гаснущий огонь нуждается в том, чтобы его принял в себя и дал возвыситься над своим холодным противником огонь больший, чем он... Но не яростный и не прохладный, а тёплый, словно солнечный свет, огонь, которые не станет захватывать и разрушать, а отдаст себя полностью, чтобы никто не погиб в бою с холодом, чтобы все нашли в себе тепло... И погибнет ради этой цели, не рассуждая. Потому что этот огонь никогда не погаснет и возродится, как феникс, из пепла, каким бы ни был холод вокруг. Умереть, даже зная, что вернёшься - нелегко...
Нашёл. Тебя. И искал тебя и только тебя. Несправедливо... Наверное. Но разве справедливость может пробудить огонь в холоде?.. Разве справедливость может дать мне такую великую удачу - вновь увидеть тебя?..
Он не говорил, молча смотря ей в глаза, крепко держа её руку в своей, он просто смотрел в её глаза, чувствуя, что она его понимает... И что битва в её душе становится равной. Потому что теперь она никогда не будет сражаться одна. Иначе зачем жить глупому мальчишке, до сих пор не понявшему, что этот бой не его... Но, наверное, в незнании та сила, которая и помогает преодолевать непреодолимое.
Холод, лёд, смерть, надвигающиеся на слабый огонёк надежды, остановились... Перед ними теперь стоял противник, которого они не смогут уничтожить. Но он будет тут недолго, это они также осознавали... Масса, олицетворяющая саму погибель этого внутреннего мирка, двинулась вперёд снова, видя, что у них опять только один противник, второй растаял, как ночной морок утром... Но они не знали, что даже за мгновения расклад сил может смениться навсегда.
Скорпио улыбнулся, открыто и счастливо, как ребёнок, которым он когда-то был, смотря ей в глаза и не видя ничего, кроме той частички тепла, которая теперь точно не сдаст своих позиций и точно не сдастся в этом бою. Странный путник, появившийся в стороне от них, не был удостоен и взглядом... Ему было не до проблем этого мира, он смотрел в глаза Эльдикомире, надеясь, до боли в душе, молясь всем богам, известным и неизвестным ему разом, чтобы она смогла преодолеть не-себя...

Еще до того, как он явил себя миру, эльф успел заметить перемены, происшедшие на лице его бывшей спутницы. Оживление, свет и радость, пусть и не самые яркое из тех, какие за свою довольно продолжительную жизнь видел Феанор, но все же необычные для этого когда-то бывшим каменно-невеселым, лица, не могли не радовать остроухого. В поисках источника этой перемены взгляд Перворожденного остановился на молодом человеке возле девушки, коего раньше он удостоил особенным вниманием. Впрочем, для эльфа все люди были, можно сказать, на одно лицо. Они совершенно не интересовали его, потому что у них не было ничего такого, что могло бы заинтересовать бессмертное создание, живущее в стране, в которой царит чуть ли не утопия, и который может обеспечить себя всем, что ему только может потребоваться. Но сейчас был особенный случай. А потому он изо всех усилий старался отыскать отличия этого смертного от всех прочих, что ему, откровенно говоря, было так же нелегко, как, скажем, человеку искать отличия одного барана от другого.
В голове же Феанора беспрестанно вертелись одни и те же мысли – кто он? Из рассказа, поведанного ему Айлоной, он не мог припомнить никаких близких у ее дочери. Неужели у нее за жизнь в образе почти что отшельницы мог появиться возлюбленный, брат, кузен, сын? Подобное обстоятельство в некоторой степени запутывало все дело, хотя, пожалуй, и не мешало его исполнению. Впрочем, нельзя и сказать, что возможность того, что в Эллесмере появится не особенно желанный житель из числа смертных больно радовала предводителя эльфийской лесной стражи. Сам он к людям относился с подозрением, ибо еще со времени первой войны с Гальбаториксом потерял к ним всякое доверие, как к существам либо подлым, таким как Гальбаторикс и те феодалы и кондотьеры, что пошли за ним, в надежде получить от него роскошные земельные угодья в награду за то, что они предали своего законного короля, Ангреноста, и начали против него войну… (Ну и как можно относиться к тем – думал Феанор – кто постоянно  ведет междоусобные войны?) Либо же как к существам слабым и либо беспомощным, либо трусливымЮ таким как миллионы крестьян, горожан, и даже феодалов, что покорно, без боя склонили головы перед человеком некоролевской крови, что противоречило любым принятым везде кодексам и уставам? При чем многие даже и не поддержали своего короля… И, что самое главное, ни один человек не попытался вызволить его из темницы! Чего-чего, я такого безразличного отношения к монарху Феанор понять не мог. Не то, чтобы он сам был особенно преданным Имиладрис или особенно ее любил, но он был ей предан настолько, насколько должен быть предан вассал своему сюзерену, не более и не менее того. И если бы, не допусти дракон, случилось такое, что его королева попала в плен, он бы сделал все необходимое, чтобы выручить ее. Да что он – так сделал бы любой честный эльф. И вот, эти то (да и многие другие) различия двух рас и послужили главной причиной неприязни Феанора к людям. Конечно, он питал  некоторое уважение к варденам, но не особенно ценил их, считая за какой-то недисциплинированный сброд, случайно сумевший одержать несколько побед на армией императора. Большим почтением у него пользовалось государство Сурда, хотя настолько искушенный в военном деле король, как Оррин, и не позволял эльфу возлагать на сию страну большие надежды. Единственным, кто, на его взгляд, реально был способен победить императора, были эльфы. Ну, да мы отвлеклись…
Глубоко глядя в глаза этого юноши, и словно бы видя его на сквозь, Перворожденный узрел в них молодость, неопытность, горячность и желание жизни. Закономерно для человека такого возраста… Вот только Феанор уже давно прошел через это и ныне смотрел на подобные вещи почти безразлично, зная, что ничего хорошего из этого не выйдет.
Словно опомнившись от долгого сна, эльф спустился на землю из своих рассуждений и, переведя взгляд с юноши на его собеседницу, промолвил:
- Приветствую вас. – если начало его речи относилось к обоим путникам, то дальнейшие слова были адресованы прямо Эльдикомире – Я исполнил то, что должен был и пришел за вами. Ответьте, можем ли мы продолжать путь в страну моего народа?

Хотя смотрела Икоми на Скорпио не прямо, жизнь отшельницы в лесу и материнская кровь вкупе с обучением в детские годы, заложившим основы восприятия мира, наделили её чуткостью к скрытым малозаметным переменам. И её внимание мгновенно среагировало, словив отталкивающий, неприязненный, но как-то скрыто, за спокойствием, взгляд. Чем-то это встревожило девушку. Она узнавала то же во многих взглядах зверей, выжидающих реакцию нового потенциального противника. Не вызывающий, но испытующий взгляд... Икоми не понимала и растеряно проводила юношу глазами.
Холодная струйка скользнула за шиворот откуда-то сверху, заставив девушку вздрогнуть и поёжиться с самым жалостливым видом. Это конь Феанора, вымокший до последней шерстинки, стоял над незадачливой авантюрной поклажей, упрекающе глядя сверху на сие прискорбное явление Мироздания. С его гривы обильно стекала вода.
- Прости, хороший, но тебе вверили растяпу...
Икоми прикусила язычок, с самым растерянным видом замечая внешнее проявление неожиданного бесхитростного тепла, проникающего во все потаённые уголки души многим живее привычного царапающего холода. На мгновение овладев своим телом, девушка приподнялась с земли и ухватилась за повод, поняв, что ноги абсолютно непригодны для эксплуатации в дальнейшие полчаса. Кое-как подтянувшись, она прислонилась лбом к морде коня, запустив пальцы в великолепную гриву и скрыв таким образом свою слабость. Пальцы полукровки не впивались в кожу животного и не тянули за волос, скорее это было психологически важно - держаться, хоть и за воздух. Икоми не могла себе позволить беззащитность. Всегда одна, всегда сама. Поэтому сейчас она стояла, дрожа всем телом как осиновый лист, вымученно и облегчённо улыбаясь с закрытыми глазами под подрагивающими ресницами, пряча за волосами лицо и шею с учащённо пульсирующей артерией, не выдавая волнения никому... Но конь-то знал, это умное животное, фырчащее ей в ключицу почти человечески добродушно. Икоми тихо засмеялась от щекотки и подняла голову, с благодарностью глядя на "посвящённого" в маленькую тайну её существа - она обычный человек... Почему-то люди боятся смотреть в глаза лошадям. "Они не любят, когда их понимают... им страшно, что их наконец поймут, хотя всей душой всю жизнь жаждут этого - быть понятыми," - так кто-то говорил при ней когда-то... или она сама так раньше уже думала, но о другом... Слова не меняют смысла, они верны себе. Но не стоит ожидать от них преданности одному значению. Этот урок она тоже усвоила давно. Как много уроков ей преподали и как много оказалось позабыто... Икоми вздохнула, чувствуя лёгкий стыд. Ненадолго мысли привычно вернулись к прежней теме, чтобы досказать себя. "Они боятся истины и даже правды. Бояться быть понятыми кем-то, потому что в таком случае уже не смогут оставаться закрытой книгой для самих себя..." Одиночка ощутила этот страх яснее. Да... она почувствовала его в смешении чувств, возникших из ниоткуда под взглядом Скорпио... "Скорпио..." Отшельница обернулась, её страх вдруг метнулся в другое своё воплощение. "Обещал," - сухо прервала его девушка. Страх осёкся и съёжился, тут же растаяв ненужным наваждением. Это был повод задуматься... Но чутьё подсказывало, что думать в этот раз бесполезнее, чем просто ждать объяснения. Смиренно пожав плечами, девушка погладила эльфийского скакуна обтянутой кожаной полу-перчаткой ладонью. Жёсткая шерсть приятно покалывала подушечки пальцев. Вновь налетел ласковый порыв ветра, пробравший неудавшуюся утопленницу насквозь холодом. Казалось, даже душа её продрогла... Ей хотелось сбежать, спрятаться от этого холода, но куда и как?.. И вот, ей становилось боязно и жалко себя, ещё немножко - и слабость возьмёт своё: она почувствует прохладные безвольные слёзы, её губы дрогнут и сотрут следы полу-улыбки, а потом... "Не бывать этому!" Глаза девушки вспыхнули решимостью. Да, это была гордость. Одиночка...никогда не упадёт лицом в грязь в собственных глазах, она себе этого не простит! По беспорядочным прядям пробежала палевая рыжина да и только. Наконец, завершив разбор полётов с собственным телом и разумом, полу-эльфийка заговорила с Феанором.
- Кое-что даёт мне право отказаться... Я думала, смогу совладать со своим нравом и встретиться с матерью, как подобает дочери. Но я была самонадеянна. Не в моих правилах не оправдывать ожиданий. Я знаю мать, она ожидает Свою Дочь. Но я ещё не она. Вам придётся объясниться с ней. Мне жаль.
Икоми склонила голову и приложила сложенные вместе указательный и средний пальцы правой руки к левой ключице. "Я говорю правду и ничем не лгу".

Вернувшемуся Скорпио предстала вполне занятная картина маслом - ни новоявленного эльфа, ни следов пребывания кого-либо ещё, кроме приведённого им коня, не наблюдалось, зато наблюдалась Икоми, явно уже промёрзшая до костей. Всё же весна, хоть и такая тёплая, не создана для неожиданного купания в реках и попыток после этого стоять в мокрой одежде на ветру. Так что он, подойдя к оставшимся, видимо, на его совести двум представителям нечеловеческого мира, накинул плащ на Икоми и дружелюбно посмотрел на коня, в котором явно чувствовалась необычная для животного мудрость.
- Видимо, этот незнакомец решил оставить вас... А кто он вообще?.. - Скорпио отошёл чуть в сторону, достал топор из седельной сумки на Свэне, ласково потрепав того по гриве, чтобы не вздумал ревновать внимание хозяина к новоявленному, чужому коню. Оглянувшись, Скорпио увидел несколько высохших стволов деревьев, скорее всего, рухнувших ещё зимой, не выдержавших гнёта снега, и отправился за ними. Как-никак нужно было высушить одежду Эльдикомиры, хотя кто знает, может, она могла это сделать и магией... В любом случае костёр сейчас был бы нелишним, особенно потому, что тут им предстояло, скорее всего, остановиться хотя бы до следующего утра, отсутствие запасов провизии и воды давало о себе знать. Наконец, он стаскал достаточное количество нарубленного сушняка и хвороста, чтобы предстоящий костёр горел до ночи. Вечерком скорее всего придётся сходить за дровами ещё раз, но это навряд ли будет в тягость - нужно будет только пошастать в другой стороне от стоянки.
