События происходят за десять лет до современных событий.

Место действия

Небольшая деревенька Айик, расположенная на территории, находящейся одновременно и недалеко от центра Империи, и одновременно достаточно далеко, чтобы в ней почти не ощущался гнет власти Императора. В этой деревне живёт юный Скорпио Теренас, единственный выживший из своей семьи, перебитой по навету алчных недоброжелателей, обставивших их рвение в службе Гальбаториксу как попытки разрушить давно заведённые порядки жизни при дворе. Деревня некрупна, но поля вокруг неё занимают обширные территории. Главные "достопримечательности" деревни: Рынок, где можно купить многое из стандартного сельхозинвентаря поселянина или же грубую крестьянскую одежду, а так же еду; Кабак "Серый Сом", в котором можно узнать множество разнообразнейших слухов о жизни вне деревни и порядочно нагрузиться спиртным; Дом землевладелицы, леди Иннесс, дальней родственницы Скорпио, по "доброте" своей укрывшей его в своей деревне. (А сама она в это время пытается получить оставшиеся ему в наследство земли и деньги).

Ленивый, первый солнечный луч мазанул по комнате, прорезая собой зависшую в воздухе пыль и освещая лицо мальчишки, усиленно щурящегося, силясь не прерывать сон, в котором... Да кто знает, что с ним там происходило. В любом случае, луч света был крайне нежелательным гостем на его лике и лицо стало постепенно перемещаться в сторону спасительной тени... Как вдруг в его нос попала часть висящей в воздухе пыли. Громкий чих мальчишки разорвал тишину комнаты и встрепенул пыль перед его носом. Скорпио Теренас лениво приоткрыл глаз, другой держа закрытым, так как на нём плотно закрепился луч солнца, а двигать головой желания не было никакого. Но всё же ему пришлось пересилить себя и переместить голову в тень. Там он смог наконец-то спокойно прикрыть глаза... Но заснуть уже не смог.
Чертыхнувшись, он поднялся с пола заброшенного дома, в котором и заснул вчера, сморённый усталостью от почти часового лазанья по этого дома же чердаку, где он искал хоть что-то, что говорило бы о личности его прежних владельцев. Всегда когда он об этом спрашивал, ему все отвечали что-то про травницу-гадалку и про её исчезновение... И всё. А раз больше ничего не было известно, то он докопается до истины! Он же Скорпио Теренас! Мальчишка отряхнул с одежды пыль и пошёл ещё раз в обход по дому, где ничего не показывало абсолютно никакой странности... Но он нутром чуял, что что-то в этом домишке не так! Но вот что?.. Он не знал, но не уставал искать.
Прошло два часа... Уже отчаявшись, он сидел в бывшей прихожей (судя по двери наружу, запертой, так как в дом он попал через прохудившуюся крышу) и со скептическим выражением на эту самую дверь смотрел.
"Может, секрет скрыт не вверху, а внизу?.. Или же нет никакого секрета?.."
Скорпио нахохлился, прижавшись спиной к стене и съехав по ней вниз. Если в этом доме не было секретов, зачем было его вообще оставлять!?
"Нет, секрет точно есть!"
Он принялся с утроенной энергией бегать по дому, осматривая каждый угол... Пока в конце концов не нашёл странный конверт в одном из шкафов, под прогнившей планкой, скрывавшей скрытый ящичек внутри ящика обычного.
"Вот оно!"
Скорпио гордо улыбнулся... И положил конверт на место.
"Теперь я знаю тайну этого дома... Интересно, кому был адресован этот..."
Вдруг он услышал лёгкие шаги и скрип двери... Не иначе как пришли посыльные Иннесс, ищущие его!.. А им нельзя доверять тайны... Мысленно попросив прощения у написавшего письмо, Скорпио засунул его себе во внутренний карман куртейки и вздохнул, готовясь уже проследовать за стариком Ральфом, слугой Иннесс, славящимся своим талантом находить юного Теренаса повсюду, где тот только появлялся и куда убегал.
"Я верну письмо на место потом, обещаю..."
- Ты опять нашёл меня, старик... Но в следующий раз я убегу так, что и ты меня не отыщешь! - Скорпио обернулся к "старику"... И на его лице прописалось настоящее удивление. Это был совсем-совсем не Ральф...
- И... Извините... - Он доверчиво улыбнулся, облегчённо вздохнув и непроизвольно прижимая ладонь к груди, где явно чувствовалось кожей сквозь тонкую ткань кармана письмо.

- Вот так вот… Если хотела побыть одна, Икоми, не стоило возвращаться в собственный дом, - губы девушки тронула довольно холодная усмешка. Она было не в том настроении, чтобы приходить в свой же дом подобно гостье. Но всё же… странница уже снова приоткрыла рот, чтобы сказать, что в прятки играть надлежит не по чужим домам, и сдержала себя. Да, она была зла холодной злостью, сама не понимая, почему. Быть может, её совершенно выбило из равновесия «преображение» порядков жизни в родном ей месте… единственно родном во всей Алагейзии, которую скиталица за пару десятков лет исходила почти всю – бесцельно, вне времени, бесплодно…
Странница тряхнула головой. Всегда наброшенный на голову капюшон сполз на плечи, и волнистые мерцающие плавающими пятнами различных оттенков волосы оказались полностью на виду. Вкупе с ястребиными, прояснившимися от искренней ярости, заменившей сожаление и разочарование, зелёными с проступающими карими вкраплениями глазами, это создавало странное впечатление о человеке, наверное… к тому же, если это девушка в потёртых запачканных дорожных вещах, и на лице этой девушки бледная маска выжидающего спокойствия и неспешного размышления. В итоге, девушка сломалась. Со смиренным вздохом она обошла юнца и присела на ступеньку лестницы наверх. Лестница скрипнула визгливо, возмущённо, что не прибавило оптимизма, но всё же позабавило уставшую от выпитой жизни одиночку. Слабая попытка весёлой улыбки промелькнула на её лице, но лишь едва различимым движением губ; глаза как-то сразу опустели и потухли, словно краски от времени. Подтянув ноги к себе и положив на них руку, Икоми сделала подзывающее движение своему неожиданному гостю, пришёдшему раньше хозяйки.
- И кто пожаловал в дом моей матери Айлоны? Что же ты делал тут? Рассказывай, - голос звучал несколько резко и уж точно не тепло и доброжелательно, как обычно при любом внутреннем состоянии звучал для посторонних людей, а взгляд и вовсе приближался к льдистому. Икоми снова вздохнула, только этот вздох уже выражал сожаление и скрытое извинение. И почему с ним не получилось сыграть в эту игру? Ни то наступил её предел, ни то атмосфера дома не давала ей собраться, ни то она чего-то в этом мальчишке явно не понимала… А ведь действительно : мальчишка. Она даже не подумала в чём-то подозревать его. Просто приняла как само собой разумеющееся, что он появился здесь и сейчас, когда и она. Икоми даже позволила себе зевнуть, совсем утомлённая дорогой и недавним кратковременным всплеском негативных эмоций.

- Вот так вот… Если хотела побыть одна, Икоми, не стоило возвращаться в собственный дом - Скорпио хотел было попросить прощения или же сразу уйти, но...
"Это... Её дом? Тогда у меня сейчас фактически её вещь... А это уже воровство..."
Твёрдый край письма словно укоризненно кольнул его кожу, Скорпио растерянно оглянулся, не понимая, что ему делать и как исправить эту ситуацию, но вдруг его взгляд упал на говорившую с ним женщину... Она была довольно таки красива, причём красотой именно той, что воспевается бардами и поэтами, а не опошлённой правильностью черт лица и приятным глазу соотношением форм... Но вся её красота просыпалась в ней лишь на секунды, прежде чем вновь угаснуть, словно в ней не осталось уже той энергии жизни, рождающей в общем то ту самую красоту, красоту жизни и гармонии, царящей во всём. Скорпио невольно чуть порозовел, мысленно проклиная книги, которые он так часто читал в библиотеке отца... Видимо, и правда стоило читать ему сказки, а не поэмы и романы. Вот теперь при виде каждого встречного человека он начинал скурпулёзно искать в нём что-то от запомнившихся ему героев... В этой же странной женщине было соединено всё, что только могло бы было быть соединено в одном облике. Единственное, что делало её лицо маской, это безжизненный, холодный взгляд каре-зелёных глаз... Сейчас в них он видел лишь холод и недружелюбие, но и эти чувства были словно опустошены и формализованы...
Девушка (А по его мнению, хоть глаза её и выглядели уставшими от жизни и пустыми, она была ещё молода) обошла его и села неподалёку на ступеньку деревянной лестницы, громко проскрипевшую... И Скорпио опять увидел в её глазах секундное прояснение и возврат в них жизни. Это было очень странно и интересно, раньше такого он не видел и слыхать о таком не слыхал... Шутка ли - девушка с глазами, достойными прожившей пару-тройку сотен лет... Он подошёл чуть ближе к ней, стараясь теперь уже не так пристально на неё смотреть, хотя что-то в ней откликалось в нём, и он с удивлением понял, что частично даже понимает её ощущения... Когда она оглянулась ещё раз, он вновь увидел в её глазах лёд, сковавший всю её душу.
Она выглядела, как и подобает путнику, прошедшему долгое расстояние до места, где возможно было отдохнуть, но особо странным было то, что волосы её, как и глаза, часто меняли цвет, хотя при этом глаза не становились более живыми, словно это были абсолютно бессмысленные изменения... Но раз они менялись, то смысл был! Но понять его Скорпио пока что не мог.
Он осознал, что уже минуту вторую стоит на месте, не слишком вежливо рассматривая свою собеседницу и виновато улыбнулся, признавая свою бестактность.
- И кто пожаловал в дом моей матери Айлоны? Что же ты делал тут? Рассказывай - Холодный голос, холодные глаза... Всё же что-то в ней было не так, но Скорпио не мог понять, что. Поэтому, пока что оставалось лишь одно - поддержать разговор, послушно придвинувшись ближе и садясь на другой стороне ступеньки.
- Я... Я прошу прощения за свой поступок, миледи, но этот дом долгие года считался нами незаселённым... И в нём я прячусь. - Он услышал лёгкий зевок и запаниковал, понимая, что вернувшейся домой госпоже, как она назвала себя, Икоми, явно не понравится то, что какой-то мальчишка облазал весь её дом... Да и рассказ его скорее всего ей скучен.
- Меня зовут Скорпио, я - последний наследник семьи Теренас... Не думаю, что это о многом говорит вам. Я взял на себя дерзость проникнуть в этот дом лишь для того, чтобы меня не нашли... Иначе моя жизнь будет совсем никому не нужна и бесполезна. Меня, скорее всего, сделали бы марионеткой в руках моей родственницы, леди Иннесс... А я не хочу быть куклой. Я хочу жить своей жизнью! - Он улыбнулся, поняв, что несколько переборщил с откровеннстью, но всё же спокойно держась перед ней и спокойно смотря в её глаза, хотя холодный взгляд его собеседницы не предполагал благосклонности к его проступку.
- Я ещё раз прошу меня простить... Думаю, мне стоит покинуть Ваш дом. Всё же я не имел права в нём находиться... - Он вздохнул, заранее придумывая способ пройти так, чтобы его не сцапал Ральф или же. хуже того, сама Иннесс... Шансов почти не было, но он должен же был попробовать... Вдруг в грудь опять кольнуло острым концом конверта. Скорпио качнул головой, улыбаясь и достал конверт.
- Я нашёл это в Вашем доме... Извините, если оно принадлежит вам или же имеет к вам отношение. Я лишь старался спасти это письмо от рук своих надсмотрщиков, которые, как я думал, пришли за мной - а это оказались вы... - Он протянул письмо страннице, опять виновато улыбаясь и предчувствуя, что неприятно для него будет окончание этого дня - после такого заявления со стороны вторгшегося в чужой дом мальчишки хозяйка дома вполне могла позвать стражу и просто упечь его под арест, как воришку. Странно, но сомнений в том, что именно эта госпожа - хозяйка дома у него не осталось... Наверное, подействовало её поведение - она двигалась так, словно это место ещё было жилым и с настоящей болью смотрела на руины...

Чувства и эмоции… Она совсем разучилась выражать их глазами: её взгляд всегда был пуст и холоден, лишь иногда пробегала светлая тень, заставляя его на миг озаряться  ясным зелёным свечением. Все они жили только в её слезах – самых искренних словах души, –  а знать о себе давали лишь изменением окраса спутанных прядей, круглосуточно скрываемых под капюшоном. Сейчас же она спокойно сидела с непокрытой головой и не испытывала даже того неприятного ощущения, когда капюшон сползал без свидетелей. Может быть, потому что этот горе-посетитель не рассматривал её более, чем этом было позволительно? Его вполне спокойное и расслабленное поведение оказывало тот же эффект на саму девушку и такая атмосфера ей начинала нравиться.
- Я... Я прошу прощения за свой поступок, миледи, но этот дом долгие года считался нами незаселённым... И в нём я прячусь.
- Всё правильно. Если бы дом был пуст, как в предыдущие 80 лет, мне было бы тоскливо и слишком одиноко. А это уже совсем не то состояние, в которое я хотела… За это – прощаю.
Краткая биографическая справка действительно ничего не сказала полукровке, так что эти сведения она просто приняла к сведению. Но последние четыре фразы побудили её повернуться в пол оборота и, наклонив голову к плечу, взглянуть на мальчишку с интересом, превосходящим его собственный пару минут назад. Улыбка сама собой преобразила лицо странницы, мгновенно рассеяв иллюзорное недовольство.
- Ты напрасно так переживаешь. У тебя самая выгодная позиция в этой игре. Если почувствуешь, что стал чьей-то марионеткой – не обязательно спешить освободиться. Нет более искусного кукловода, чем марионетка, надевшая маску, - Икоми подняла одну руку вверх и немного в сторону, повесив кисть так, словно к её запястью была привязана невидимая нить, а другую медленным движением поднесла к лицу, раскрыв ладонь, словно пальцами держала нечто почти плоское, и, сделав секундную задержку перед самым своим лицом, сверкнула глазами, после чего аккуратным жестом как бы надела свою маску на лицо, прикрывая глаза и пряча за веками себя настоящую, - Не такой уж хороший совет, но если чувствуешь, что тебя связывают по рукам и ногам, тебе не остаётся ничего иного, кроме как порвать нити или же начать дёргать за пальцы, к которым они привязаны. Пускай играют ту мелодию, которая нужна тебе. Печально, что люди так часто забываются в своей власти и забывают, что любая нить – это связь двусторонняя.
Девушка сменила позу, выгнув спину и вытянув правую ногу, которая совсем затекла. Такие рассуждения на неё находили всё чаще, от пары слов, от одного взгляда… Это становилось странным и отдаляло её от прошлой себя. Уже чётче ощущалось: скоро будет разлом, и вчерашнее настоящее навсегда станет прошлым. Поэтому она и была здесь. Лишь поэтому решилась прийти сюда вновь, ещё раз, последний, быть может. Всё не покидало впечатление, будто она не по самостоятельному желанию вернулась в этот дом, а привела домой брошенного ребёнка, каким ушла из него. И это ощущение брошенности… предвестник одиночества… Ведь никто же её не бросал, она бросила всех, всё. Но откуда?.. Только возобновившееся звучание голоса Скорпио мягко вынуло её из омута неясных ощущений и удручённых мыслей. Она почти неосознанно отмечала манеру его речи и часто повторяющееся в ней. Похоже, ему было в самом деле стыдно за свой поступок, столько извинений даже начало забавить одиночку. А ещё постоянное обращение «на Вы»…При каждом «вы» в лице Икоми что-то неуловимо менялось, а внутри леденело. Вежливость и уважение для неё всегда бывали лишь заслуженными и не нуждающимися в формальностях и условностях, по этой же причине она не приветствовала эльфийский этикет. Чем больше условное уважение, тем больше расстояние. Она редко заговаривала с людьми и теперь не хотела лишать  беседу свободы. К тому же… из собственных уст слово «Вы» почти всегда выражало глубокую неприязнь и раздражение, а к мальчишке она испытывала лёгкую симпатию, и каждый раз наталкиваться на свой стереотип значения этого слова ей становилось совсем неприятно. Наконец девушка не стерпела:
- Это слово режет слух, не надо.
На письмо полукровка посмотрела с искренним удивлением, от чего её волосы мигнули пшеничной рябью. Чуть подавшись вперёд к Скорпио, она прочла на конверте фрагмент надписи: «Эльдикомире…» - и ей уже не надо было читать ни символом больше, чтобы понять, от кого. Разве могла она не узнать мамин почерк?.. В груди нечто сжалось и сочилось сладкой болью, не испытываемой до этого никогда… Икоми едва успела сдержать стон и остановить увлажнившие беспомощно молящий взгляд слёзы. Прикрыв глаза, она сделала глубокий вдох, и состояние похолодевшего пепла вновь наполнило её душу, как ветер наполняет опавшие паруса, вернув самообладание. Уверенно, но мягко отведя в сторону руку юного Теренаса, Икоми заглянула к нему в глаза. Она хотела что-то сказать, но просто покачала головой. Несколько секунд, выпав из времени, она так и оставалась сидеть, не убрав руку с его предплечия и смотря в глаза, но по сути не воспринимая ничего этого. Наконец полу-эльфийка сумела объяснить:
- Нет, уже или ещё, но оно адресовано не мне. Такого… человека пока что в мире просто не существует. Но… могла бы я у тебя кое о чём попросить? Сбереги его и отдай ей, если ваша встреча когда-либо произойдёт.
Икоми медленно перевела взгляд на конверт, ведя за ним и взгляд собеседника, и коснулась своего имени на нём так, что средний и безымянный пальцы прикрыли крайние части, оставив только середину. Икоми.
- Я подумала, пока мы разговаривали… этому дому хорошо, когда ты в нём, он не отвергает тебя. Мне нравится это. Можешь в нём жить и уйти тогда, когда тебе больше не останется ни одной загадки, которую он хранит, - девушка улыбнулась, пожалуй, тепло; она ведь понимала – мать не оставляла подобные вещи на виду, - Значит, Скорпио Теренас? Хотя, на что мне твоя фамилия? Имя рода говорит лишь о возможностях человека. Куда важнее его собственное имя. Надеюсь, ты ещё покажешь миру, на что способен, и я услышу его через несколько лет с радостью.
Это было неплохим прощанием, отчасти потому что она впервые за долгое время прощалась с кем-то с искренней надеждой на встречу. Когда-нибудь и как-нибудь.

Разговор словно преображал собеседницу Скорпио, растворяя лёд в её глазах и заменяя холод, исходивший от её слов, на что-то, странно напоминающее дружелюбие и теплоту, хотя назвать это теплотой пока что было нельзя, но она по крайне мере стала совсем другой... Наверное, ей и самой было неловко от того, что она так холодно начала разговор.
Её же совет... Скорпио не мог заставить себя носить маску, хоть это и должно было спасти его. Он не мог согласиться с такой философией, но не подал вида, рассудив, что совет ему дала явно мудрая и знающая жизнь (Как бы это не сочеталось с её возрастом) женщина и просто пренебрегать этим советом было бы очень и очень глупо. Так что он решил пока что не оспаривать её мнение, но остаться при своём... Он в любом случае не смог бы подстроиться под Иннесс и подчиняться ей... Одна мысль об этом рождала в нём сильное сомнение в том, что он сможет так жить. Это была бы лёгкая и приятная жизнь залога благополучия хозяйки дома... Но это не было жизнью, которой он желал. Ему хотелось жить полной жизнью, жить так, чтобы об этом потом сложили легенды... Или в крайнем случае просто вспомнили, что был такой - Скорпио Теренас... И не было для него разницы в методах достижения этого - но всё же он больше мечтал стать не бесстрашным рыцарем или всезнающим и всемогущим магом или же грозным мастером клинка и незаметности, чья рука держит пульс ночи... А просто человеком, на которого он, мальчишка, посмотрел бы и просто поверил в него, в то, что этот человек добился всего, чего человек в жизни может добиться. А таких людей в этом мире мало.
Но почти при каждой фразе Скорпио в её глазах опять на миг появлялся лёд, и юный Теренас не мог понять, что в его словах так на неё влияет, пока она сама не дала ему ответ...
- Это слово режет слух, не надо.
Скорпио растерянно улыбнулся, поняв, что собеседница его, видимо, не любит это обращение... Он и сам не мог сказать, что так уж он это обращение любил - оно сразу же ставило рамки между людьми, а это было в корне неправильно... но всё же и об этих размышлениях он забыл, увидев искреннее удивление на лице Икоми. Такое удивление проступает лишь на лицах тех, кто не может в лике старика увидеть с детства знакомое лицо друга, с которым надолго разлучила судьба... Словно сейчас она увидела человека, давно мёртвого по идее, но всё ещё живого и, как оказалось, очень важного... Скорпио даже почудилось, что на секунда в её глазах появились слёзы, так из них и не вырвавшиеся, но оттого ещё более красноречиво намекающие на то, что письмо это было ей небеезразлично... В глаза же ей он сейчас смотреть избегал, потому что опасался, что не сможет оторвать от них взгляда... Ведь есть что-то притягательное в глазах, сквозь которые рвётся то, что сдержано было в душе... Глаза - зеркало души, и сейчас ему не хотелось видеть то, что могли выражать такие глаза... Но вместе с сочувствием в нём проснулось и желание помочь, защитить человека, так сильно раненного его действием. Но миг слабости прошёл и вот в глаза её вернулись спокойствие и прохлада... Она коснулась его руки, заставив его вздрогнуть от нелжиданности и отвела его руку в сторону. Теперь уже она смотрела ему в глаза, и он не мог отвести взгляд, с лёгким испугом и безграничным сочувствием смотря в её бездонные глаза, глаза человека, разбившего свою душу, и лишь теперь понявшего, что лечится и это... Болезненно, страшно, но лечится. Но даже настолько базрадостные глаза не могли уничтожить его веры в то, что любое испытание жизни легче пройти с улыбкой на лице... И сейчас он тепло улыбнулся, доверительно обхватив её руку пальцами. Сейчас он мог, наверное, помочь ей своими словами или же действиями... Но он не желал этого делать. Это разрушило бы странное чувство того, что именно сейчас он ей и помогает, без всяких слов, без действий, без громких фраз... Хватило лишь улыбки, сочувствия и, главное, желания помочь ей... А может, было и что-то ещё, что укрылось даже от её взгляда, точно видевшего его насквозь... Наконец она смога объяснить свои ощущения.
- Нет, уже или ещё, но оно адресовано не мне. Такого… человека пока что в мире просто не существует. Но… могла бы я у тебя кое о чём попросить? Сбереги его и отдай ей, если ваша встреча когда-либо произойдёт. - Скорпио глянул на письмо, на котором явно было вино лишь... Вдруг он понял. Всё же это письмо было адресованно ей... Но, наверное, ей казалось, что ей оно сейчас не поможет... Но как же тогда он мог поступить?.. А взгляд его тем временем зацепился за то, что дало отгадку - Имя его новой знакомой было лишь частью имени общего. Наверное, ей и правда пока что было рано читать это письмо... Рука Скорпио отпустила руку Икоми, он улыбнулся ещё раз, опять же ободряюще и дружелюбно. Странно... Сейчас он знал о тайне... Икоми?.. Нет, Эльдикомиры, даже почти не зная её саму... Наверное, так и должно было быть. - Я подумала, пока мы разговаривали… этому дому хорошо, когда ты в нём, он не отвергает тебя. Мне нравится это. Можешь в нём жить и уйти тогда, когда тебе больше не останется ни одной загадки, которую он хранит - Скорпио удивлённо вскинул бровь, оглядываясь. Теперь... Теперь он точно не собирался отсюда уходить, пока все тайны этого дома не откроются пред ним... А скорее всего, пред Эльдикомирой, ведь его любопытство было полностью удовлетворено и теми крохами информации, что он получил. А ей все эти тайны были бы в разы нужнее... чтобы теплота в её глазах была всегда и не заменялась льдом и холодом.
